RBG and Laverne are giving me life today.

Supreme Queen Ruth Bader Ginsburg was named to Time magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People and this is the photo they posted. It is amazing. The write up that goes with it, by Justice Scalia is boring but nice. But this photo. I love it.

Laverne Cox, transgender activist and icon, actress, all around badass and babe, was also named to the TIME 100 list, which is amazing. She was snubbed last year which the trans community and EVERYONE was upset about. I lovelovelove that the blurb about Laverne was written by Jazz Jennings, who is an amazing young  trans woman who is also a LGBTQ activist and YouTube star. The photo used in Time for Ms. Cox is beautiful, but today Allure released photos for their annual Nude issue, and Laverne’s is SO AMAZING.

How beautiful is this? And so powerful. Here’s what she had to say about this:

“I said no initially, thought about it, and said no again,” she says. “But I’m a black transgender woman. I felt this could be really powerful for the communities that I represent. Black women are not often told that we’re beautiful unless we align with certain standards. Trans women certainly are not told we’re beautiful. Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about herself might be inspiring to some other folks. There’s beauty in the things we think are imperfect. That sounds very cliché, but it’s true.” Cox wanted these pictures for herself, too: “I honestly just want to make myself happy most, and if other people like it, then that’s great. If they don’t, then I’m still happy.”

YAAAASSS queen. I’m in love with everything today. Tagging this in Feminist Friday because I want to.

Happy Birthday Laverne!

This week, Laverne Cox (an actress in Orange is the New Black, a trans activist, and all around badass) is gracing the cover of TIME magazine anddd today is her birthday so that’s pretty sweet. Tagging this under Feminist Friday even though it isn’t Friday because Laverne is a role model for all women.

aerie.

In unexpected news, aerie, the lingerie line from American Eagle, has launched a campaign full of unaltered photos. No airbrushing, no unnecessary editing, nothing.

The purpose of ‘aerie Real’ is to communicate there is no need to retouch beauty, and to give young women of all shapes and sizes the chance to discover amazing styles that work best for them. We want to help empower young women to be confident in themselves and their bodies. -Jennifer Foyle, Chief Merchandising Officer

They also announced that they plan to incorporate different body types onto their website. I think this is an awesome step in the right direction (yes, I would have loved to see models who aren’t thin, fit, conventionally beautiful, and from a wider range of ethnicities, but Ill take what I can get). The cynic in me can’t help but think that in six weeks or six months, this isn’t going to be the case anymore, but I hope they keep their word.

Dear Ten-Year-Old Self,

Before you ask me when you have your first kiss or if you’ll ever have a boyfriend, I need to tell you some more important stuff first. What’s more important than a first kiss, you ask? Plenty. First of all, don’t let that kid in your class, Danny, who called you fat, make you self-consciously wear oversized sweatshirts for the next four years to hide your body. That kid is horrible and years from now he will be boring and bald and trying to get in touch with you to come to the set of the TV show you work on. No, you don’t work on Cheers. That show’s not on the air anymore. That would’ve been awesome, though. Another thing: Say thank you, always. Gratitude is the closest thing to beauty manifested in an emotion. When you’re grateful, people are attracted to you. Also: Make sure you appreciate Mom and Dad. Yes, they never seem to let you do anything now except read books. Once you turn 18 you’ll never get to live with them again, and you’ll live far away, and you will miss them so much it hurts. Next: Learn forgiveness and bestow it generously. Finally: Don’t let anyone give you any crap. Mastering a balance of these last two will take you a lifetime, so you had better get started now.
