So sometimes, when the stars align and Venus is in the third house, Beyonce Monday and Feminist Friday collide to create the most empowering, uplifting, exciting thing in the universe. And today is one of those days.
Long story short, some boring white dude (aka Fox News host Jesse Watters) was discussing the Hobby Lobby decision and Hillary Clinton’s reaction.
“This is how she’s going to try to win the White House. She is going to go to — she needs the single ladies vote — I call them the Beyoncé voters, the single ladies. Obama won single ladies by 76 percent last time and they made up about a quarter of the electorate.”
Okay. While this is not exactly how I would describe young single female voters, whatever. BUT THEN.
“They depend on government because they’re not depending on their husbands. They need things like contraception, health care, and they love to talk about equal pay.”
This guy has no idea what it means to be a “single lady” in today’s society, but he also clearly has never heard a Beyonce song. Beyonce voters are smart enough to make these millions, strong enough to bear the children, and then get back to business. By implying that single women don’t rely on a man so they have to rely on the government for their needs takes away any agency and progress women have fought for over the last 50 (100?) years.
So while this is incredibly offensive, leave it to the internet to turn it into the greatest thing ever. Sarah Coughlon, self-proclaimed Beyonce voter and current Harvard student, created this genius Tumblr. Here are my favorites:
